Salemer Pflegehof/ J.F. Schreiber Museum

Salemer Pfleghof / J.F. Schreibermuseum
Untere Beutau 8-10
73728 Esslingen am Neckar
phone: 0711-35123307

The massive stone building and former Pfleghof (monastic building) of the Cistercian monastery of Salem was first mentioned in a document of 1229. However, its location at one of the highest points of the town centre, its close proximity to the town wall and the size of the building indicate an older use. In the 16th century – after alterations and extensions had been made – the former Pfleghof served as quarters for Emperor Karl V. In the 17th century Salem handed the building over to Württemberg. It is worth visiting: the top floor of the building houses the J.F. Schreiber Museum, which has been hailed as a particular highlight. In the 19th century the company founder Jakob Ferdinand Schreiber set up a publishing firm for books and paper models bearing his name. The famous old cut-out sheets, paper theatres and children’s books take the visitor back to the children’s world a hundred years ago.
