The Schwörtag (Oath-swearing Day) was a key constitutional event which was held in Esslingen on the Sunday after the feast of St. Jacob until the loss of the city’s free imperial status. This tradition has been revived and is celebrated annually in the Schwörhof in conjunction with the Esslingen Citizens’ Festival.
On this occasion the Lord Mayor gives an account to the public and, together with his town council, swears an oath to act for the good of the city and its citizens. The ensuing Citizens’ Festival in the town centre is arranged by Esslingen clubs and foreign citizens.
The Esslingen Environment Day with its many activities and interesting discussions at information booths is an additional highlight, as is also the Esslingen Newspaper Run.
This athletic event on Sunday morning is a fixed part of the festival and is extremely popular among athletes from near and far.
