After about two years of closure, the Dicke Turm (Big Tower) will be opened to the public again as part of the guided tour "Esslingen Burg (Castle) and City Fortifications". The Hochwacht (High Watchtower) and the Dicke Turm, both visible from afar and very distinctive for Esslingen, were originally part of the fortification complex. They are connected to each other by side walls, one of which is accessible via steps. The history of the Pulverturm (Gunpowder Tower), Melac’s House and the castle courtyard round off the tour. The tour continues underground with a fascinating feature: beneath the castle complex is a huge water reservoir from which the town used to get its drinking water.
Important note: Participation in the tour is at your own risk. In order to participate, sturdy shoes, surefootedness and good physical fitness are essential. The tour is not suitable for people with cardiovascular problems and/or claustrophobia.
